Good Monday morning!
In the news today and from the weekend…
Media Alert:
- Thanks to the Huntington Herald Dispatch (W.Va.), Steubenville Herald Star (Ohio), Fayette Tribune (W.Va.), Northwest Signal (Ohio), Springfield News Leader (Mo.) and Yahoo News (USA) for carrying my new op-ed on EPA’s agenda to prematurely close coal power plants which put the electric grid’s reliability at risk.
Grid:
- Wall Street Journal carries an editorial entitled, “S.O.S for the U.S. Electric Grid.” The editorial discusses a recent report from PJM Interconnection, one of the nation’s largest grid operators. The report concludes that fossil-fuel power plants are retiring much faster than renewable sources are getting developed, which could lead to energy “imbalances.” That’s a delicate way of saying that you can expect shortages and blackouts.
- E&E News reports that a U.S. Department of Energy draft report details where the country most urgently needs more interstate transmission capacity in preparation for new wind and solar power generation.
- Utility Dive reports that a cybersecurity firm warns that more hackers are developing the ability to disrupt energy infrastructure, though the electric sector has strong defenses in place.
Energy:
- E&E News reports that House Republicans will consider 20 bills this week that are expected to become part of their promised energy and permitting reform package.
